Gold Fill vs. Solid Gold vs. Gold Plated — What's the Difference?
Share
If you've ever shopped for jewelry and wondered what the difference is between gold fill, solid gold, and gold plated — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get at LaRue & Co., and honestly, the jewelry industry doesn't make it easy to understand. So let's break it down.
Gold Plated
Gold plated jewelry has a very thin layer of gold electroplated over a base metal (usually brass or copper). We're talking microns thin — like, barely there. It looks beautiful when it's new, but that layer wears off quickly with everyday wear, exposure to water, sweat, and skin oils. You'll start to see the base metal showing through, often within months.
Gold plated is the most affordable option, but it's also the least durable. It's great for trend pieces you'll wear a few times, but not ideal for everyday jewelry.
Gold Fill
Gold fill is a whole different story. Gold fill is made by heat-bonding a thick layer of solid gold to a base metal core — by law, the gold layer must make up at least 5% of the total weight of the piece. That's 100x more gold than gold plating.
The result? Jewelry that looks and feels like solid gold, lasts for decades with proper care, and won't tarnish or turn your skin green. Gold fill is safe for sensitive skin, water-resistant, and holds up beautifully to everyday wear.
At LaRue & Co., we use 14k yellow gold fill for many of our pieces — it's our way of making fine-quality jewelry accessible without the solid gold price tag.
Solid Gold
Solid gold is exactly what it sounds like — gold all the way through. It's the most durable, most valuable, and most hypoallergenic option. A solid gold piece will literally last forever and can be passed down through generations.
At LaRue & Co., we work in 14k solid gold (yellow, rose, and white) for our fine jewelry pieces. 14k means the metal is 58.3% pure gold, mixed with other metals for strength and durability. It's the sweet spot between purity and wearability — pure enough to be hypoallergenic for most people, strong enough to hold up to real life.
So Which Should You Choose?
Here's our honest guide:
Choose gold fill if you want beautiful, durable everyday jewelry at an accessible price point. Our gold fill pieces are made to be worn daily and loved for years.
Choose solid gold if you're investing in a forever piece — an engagement ring, a push present, a piece you'll wear every single day for the rest of your life. It's worth it.
Choose gold plated for trend pieces you'll rotate in and out of your wardrobe. Just don't expect it to last.
At LaRue & Co., we're always transparent about what we use and why. Have questions about a specific piece? Reach out — we love talking jewelry.
